Understanding Why Women Lose Hair and What Can Be Done About It

Discovering more hair in your brush, noticing a widening part, seeing increased scalp visibility, or realizing your ponytail feels thinner can be frustrating and emotional. For many women, hair is closely connected to confidence, identity, and self-image.

Female hair loss is common, but it is not one-size-fits-all. Hair loss is usually a symptom of something deeper, which is why identifying the cause is the first step toward choosing the right treatment. At Maxim Hair Restoration, we evaluate each woman's hair loss pattern, medical history, scalp health, and goals before recommending a personalized plan.

Types of Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss can happen for many reasons. Some types are temporary, while others may continue to progress without proper diagnosis and treatment.

Female Pattern Hair Loss

Female Pattern Hair Loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in women. It is usually genetic and hormonal and often appears as diffuse thinning at the crown, a widening part, reduced ponytail thickness, and increased scalp visibility. This condition is commonly classified using the Ludwig Scale, ranging from early part line thinning to more advanced density loss across the top of the scalp.

Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium is a shedding condition often triggered by stress, illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, crash dieting, or high fever. The shedding usually starts two to four months after the trigger, which can make it confusing to identify. In many cases, it is temporary, but some women develop chronic shedding that requires further evaluation.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is caused by repeated tension on the hair follicles from tight braids, cornrows, ponytails, buns, weaves, extensions, or locs. Early cases may improve once the tension stops, but advanced cases can lead to permanent follicle damage. When the hairline or temples no longer grow back naturally, FUE hair transplantation may be an option.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to attack healthy hair follicles. It often appears as round patches of hair loss on the scalp but can also affect the eyebrows and eyelashes. Treatment depends on the severity, pattern, and activity of the condition.

Hormonal Hair Loss

Hormonal changes can affect the hair growth cycle and lead to shedding or thinning. Common causes include pregnancy, postpartum changes, menopause, thyroid disorders, PCOS, and changes in birth control. Proper diagnosis is important because treatment depends on the underlying hormonal trigger.

Medical and Medication-Related Hair Loss

Certain medical conditions, medications, chemotherapy, iron deficiency, low vitamin D, nutritional deficiencies, and protein deficiency can contribute to hair loss. In these cases, hair restoration often begins by identifying and correcting the underlying issue before considering procedural treatment.

Scarring Alopecia

Scarring alopecia includes conditions such as frontal fibrosing alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, and lichen planopilaris. These conditions can permanently destroy hair follicles and require medical diagnosis before hair transplantation is considered. If scarring alopecia is active, it must usually be stabilized first.
